SCDPS REPORTS 13 KILLED ON SOUTH CAROLINA ROADS DURING MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND,

MAY 26-29, 2017

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of 13 persons killed on South Carolina roadways over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The 78-hour travel period began Friday, May 26, at 6 p.m. and ran through Monday, May 29, at midnight.

 

In 2016, eight traffic fatalities were recorded over the same holiday period.

As of May 29, 2017, 402 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 396 highway deaths during the same time period in 2016.

Of the 291 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2017, 135 were not wearing safety belts. 

Through midnight May 29, 52 pedestrians died compared to 49 in 2016; 44 motorcyclists died compared to 54 in 2016; and eight bicyclists died compared to 11 in 2016 on state roads and highways.
